Marloes Sands Beach, Pembrokeshire Marloes is a great family beach, with a large expanse of sand within the Pembrokeshire National Park, notable for its cliffs with strange rock formations. The village of Marloes itself (excellent Post Office and General Stores and a couple of good places to eat) is very close to Martins Haven, from where trips can be taken to the islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm, famous for bird and seal colonies and archaeological finds.
Musselwick Sands Beach, Pembrokeshire Another gem of a beach that is hidden away – and only accessible at lowish tide and after a 10 minute walk from the road and a scramble down the rocks – but watch out when the tide comes in! Skomer is a spectacular island habitat that never fails to impress, and is one of the most important sites for wildlife in North West Europe. Run by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales under a lease from the CCW, it is accessible by boat from Martin’s Haven between 1st April to 31st October (weather permitting).
Skomer is home to one of the most easily accessible of all seabird colonies in northwest Europe, and has been a National Nature Reserve since 1959. It's also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and with the surrounding sea and the Marloes peninsula is part of the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve. In season you'll get to see a huge range of seabirds, many of which you won't find on the mainland. Puffins are the island's most famous residents, resident throughout the Summer until August, and there's plenty of other birds, mammals and insects you might see. Skomer stands exposed with no land to the southwest to protect it from Atlantic gales and swell. The fast currents in the Sounds, with their eddies and overfalls, often provide rich feeding areas for seabirds and cetaceans like the Common porpoise. The little village of St Ishmaels is just 10 minutes drive from Dale – and hidden away, across a field and a stretch of coastal path – is this delightful little bay that no one seems to go to. A place where you can just take all your clothes off and dash into the sea for a bracing swim! Hidden away around the coast between Dale and St Ann's Head, this is half an hour's walk along the Coastal Path, but you can get to within a field away by car, if you know the way. This is a beautiful, sandy beach - a family favourite!
